eBay Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year Award Goes to AOO Artist - (April 30, 2009)

Fourteen area small businesses from four counties in the region were honored on April 29, 2009 as recipients of  technology awards through the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACEnet) and the eBay Foundation Techquity Program. The reception was held at the ACEnet campus located at 94 Columbus Road, Athens.

The eBay Foundation Techquity Program, managed by the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) was developed to bolster local businesses with new technology by providing entrepreneurs with cash awards ranging from $500 to $1600 enabling them to purchase technology essential to their business. ACEnetwas one of five partners selected for this unique program that helps bridge the digital divide for entrepreneurs. The program allows ACEnet to expand their mission of helping small businesses succeed. Businesses selected by ACEnet used their Techquity awards for a variety of small business technology needs such as printers, laptops, digital cameras, and scanners.

A $500 check was presented to Marlene L’abbe, owner of Waterspider Designs in Marietta, for the eBay Foundation “Entrepreneur of the Year”. The winner was selected based on the best use of technology for the growth of their business. Marlene expanded the capacity of her business by purchasing a printer that allows her to print her original watercolor designs on tiles and other materials. Requests for her artwork has increased significantly and with a quicker process she now has time to do more in-home installation of her tiles.

Noah Trembly, digital artist and owner of Noah’s Art in Athens, will be recognized in the Association for Enterprise Opportunity 2009 Success Stories booklet. Noah used his eBay Techquity award money to purchase a personal computer with more memory to allow him to design his digital images. Born and raised in the Mid Ohio Valley, Noah has had the enjoyment of many influences over the years. Being born with Cerebral Palsy has never hindered him in his passion for knowledge and art. Noah said, “In my world art and technology are one...”

The eBay Foundation was established by eBay, Inc. in 1998 as a way to give back to entrepreneurs. The Foundation works to improve the social and economic well-being of communities by partnering with leading non-profit organizations. Since its inception, the Foundation has contributed over $12 million to non-profit organizations worldwide. To learn more about the Foundation, visit www.ebay.com/foundation.

The Ohio Plein Air Society (OPAS) will conduct an outdoor Paintout around the city of Athens on Saturday, April 11, 2009 starting at 9 a.m. at the Dairy Barn Arts Center on Dairy Lane in Athens. Painters will leave from the Dairy Barn after 9 a.m. and paint until 3 p.m., then return to the Dairy Barn’s second floor studio for display and comments. OPAS members and non-members will have an opportunity to paint beautiful landscapes and cherry tree blossoms along the Hocking River in Athens. The Dairy Barn and Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau are collaborating with OPAS to bring a day of fine art painting to Athens.

The Paintout host will be Jeffrey Risner, President of OPAS. Many OPAS members will attend, including noted Ohio artists Debra Joyce Dawson of Columbus, who has won numerous awards for her landscapes painted with oils, and Ray Hassard of Cincinnati who has won many awards for his landscapes in pastels.

As part of an OPAS public and educational outreach program, the public is invited to participate or just enjoy watching this outdoor painting adventure and experience the thrill that great artists like Van Gogh and Monet experienced with their Plein Air creations. Paintings will be available for purchase from individual artists.  Younger artists are encouraged to participate. There is no entry fee. More information about OPAS, its members, and events can be found at www.ohiopleinairsociety.com or contact Jeffrey Risner at jeff.risner@gmail.com. For more information about the Dairy Barn Arts Center and the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau, please visit www.dairybarn.org and www.athensohio.com.
